Greek Festival is this Weekend!
May 15The Greek Festival 2012 is just around the corner and we would like to invite everyone to come eat, dance, and run or walk in our inaugural 5K!
The annual Greek Festival will be held this year on May 18, 19 and 20 at Sts. Constantine & Helen’s Greek Orthodox Church at 265 West Third Street in Mansfield.
The festival is an opportunity for the Greeks in our community to showcase and share our culture with our neighbors. We invite everyone to come be Greek for the weekend.
We will have the Fabulous Grecian Keys Band, our famous Hellenic Dancers, and the ever-wonderful Greek food and pastries. There will also be plenty of Greek goods to shop for including fine Greek jewelry brought directly from Greece by Eclectics LLC Jewelry Shop.
This year we are debuting our first ever Greek Fest 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 19 at 10:00am. The 5K will be the most Greek one in town and will run past some of beautifully restored downtown Mansfield. All of our race participants will be given free entry to the festival and a gyro on the house. Festival hours will be: Friday May 18 from 4:00 – 11:00pm, Saturday May 19 11:00am – 11:00pm and Sunday May 20 from 11:00am until 7:00pm. Admission to the festival is $1.
Building Doctors Coming to Mansfield
May 04Downtown Mansfield, Inc., the Richland County Historical Society and the City of Mansfield’s Historic Preservation Commission have joined forces to bring the popular Ohio Historical Society’s Building Doctor Clinic to Mansfield. From June 21 through June 22, the Building Doctors’ will be on hand to examine commercial and residential structures. Open to all historic property owners in the region, a free evening workshop will feature guidelines for renovation projects and ways to solve some of the most common problems associated with older properties.
Free on-site consultations will be offered the following day to ten registered property owners currently residing within five miles of downtown Mansfield. On-site consultations may include the examination of persistent peeling paint or flaking plaster, wet basement, deteriorating masonry, windows, and other nonstructural issues. Forbidden City Tour in downtown Mansfield!

In honor of Preservation Month, Downtown Mansfield, Inc. and Preservation Ohio have joined forces to honor our historic past with the Forbidden City Tour!
Join us on Saturday, May 5 from 1:00pm until 5:00pm for this unique opportunity to see the inside of buildings that have not been accessible to the general public for decades. Preservationists, urban photographers or just plain curious, this tour is for you! Tickets are $20 per person, may be purchased in advance on www.downtownmansfield.com, the Downtown Mansfield facebook page, www.facebook.com/downtownmansfield or on the day of the event at Engwiller Properties, located at 4 West Fourth Street. Guests should plan to begin their self guided tour at the Engwiller Property Building, where maps and information about each location will be available.
Buildings include, City Mills building at 160 North Main Street, Eagles Building, 133 North Main Street, second and third floors of City News, 98 North Main Street and City Grille, 37 East Fourth Street and the Charles Schroer Mortuary Building, 131 North Diamond Street.
Participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing and shoes, spaces are safe and free of debris, but require walking, climbing stairs and are currently undeveloped. DMI is excited to announce that on Thursday, April 19, the next Mid Ohio Cash Mob will be held at Paul’s Drive In, located at 17 Church Street in Shelby, Ohio. Paul’s Drive In not only serves delicious food with daily specials, but also any mouth watering cold treat you can dream up! Paul’s has been a family owned and operated restaurant since 1956 and was originally named Love’s Sweet Shoppe. In 1968, Paul Schrock became the driving force for Paul’s and continued for 30 more successful years. For the past fourteen years, Ben Lash and Stephanie Hansen are carrying on the legacy of great family food and ice cream in Shelby, Ohio!
The purpose of Cash Mobs is to support local, independent businesses in North Central Ohio through a focused event to get members of the community to support a particular store on the announced date with a suggested $20 purchase. Businesses to be mobbed will be rotated from restaurants to retail and will be announced at the beginning of the week on the first and third Thursdays of each month. In an effort to focus both attention and business on our independent retailers and restaurants Cash Mobs will take place throughout the Mid Ohio region.

Mid Ohio Cash Mob Location Announced

Downtown Mansfield, Inc has joined forces with Richland Community Development Group’s Be Focal Buy Local Retail Sector to launch Mid Ohio Cash Mobs. The Cash Mobs will kick off on April 5 at Main Street Books at 5pm with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Theaker. Main Street Books is located at 104 North Main Street in the historic Carrousel District. Main Street Books is Mansfield’s only independently owned general interest book store.

Richland Newhope, MedCentral Honored
Mar 21Richland Newhope and MedCentral Mansfield have been honored by Ohio Public Images for their efforts in 2011 to support individuals with developmental disabilities.
Both organizations were recognized on Monday during the Ohio Superintendents of County Boards of Developmental Disabilities awards luncheon in Columbus.
For the fifth time in six years, Richland Newhope received an Award of Excellence for its efforts to increase awareness about the agency and how individuals served contribute to the community.
“It’s Richland Newhope’s mission to support people with developmental disabilities to live, work and participate in the community,” said Jane Imbody, Director of Community Relations for Richland Newhope. “We are thrilled that our efforts have once again received statewide recognition.”
MedCentral received an Award of Merit for its efforts to employ individuals with developmental disabilities. MedCentral was singled out for its participation in Project SEARCH, a program designed to provide work experience for youth as they transition from high school. In the past six years, 75 people with disabilities have participated and 31 have found employment in the community. MedCentral has hired 18 of those individuals and 13 are still under their employ.
The Ohio Public Images and the Public Images Network’s mission is to create positive public awareness of persons with developmental disabilities.
